#writingbiz: Mailing Lists – Don’t Overdo It

Mailing lists are extremely important for authors be they traditional or self published. Being able to directly contact a reader allows for affordable and effective marketing, which is essential for small business owners like self published authors.

As wonderful as a mailing list can be, it can also become a problem for not just the sender (in this case, the author) but also, the recipient.

And that’s the point of this here post.

Music + Writing: Gayatri Mantra

It took Battlestar Galactica to introduce me to the Gayatri Mantra and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Yes, it’s a Hindu chant and I’m a Christian, but as I noted in 2012 “I believe that the God I believe in has reached us in a variety of ways and for all the ways he allows us to access him, I am grateful.”

I listen to it from time to time and thought to share it here because it does a lot to clear my mind when I’m being creative. This version of the chant was featured in Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.

Here it is written in English lettering –

Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ

tát savitúr váreṇ(i)yaṃ

bhárgo devásya dhīmahi

dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

Translated, it means the following:

We meditate upon the radiant
Divine Light of that adorable
Sun of Spiritual Consciousness;
May it awaken our intuitional consciousness

Music + Writing: An Indispensible Collaboration

Do you have music playing in the background when you write?

I do and as the title above suggests, music and writing go hand in hand for me when I’m being creative.

My writing music is heavily indie-oriented but I do enjoy the likes of Lana Del Rey (she’s considered mainstream, right?), BANKS, Phantogram ….

I also love hearing Asa, Feist, Flume, Tove Lo … you name it, I want it to hear it.

What do you listen to?

Check out my current playlist – ‘Modern Writing Music’. Oh, it includes songs from Game of Thrones, The Leftovers and Battlestar Galactica (the reimagined series, which in my opinion was the best. show. evah!), some good old funk, palmwine music and more.
